NBFC Credit Surge in Gold and Durables

What the RBI Data Shows

Non-banking finance companies extended sharply higher credit to gold jewellery and consumer durables in September 2026, according to Reserve Bank of India data. Credit outstanding against gold jewellery rose 66.1 per cent year-on-year to Rs 3.74 lakh crore. Consumer durables financing grew 54.4 per cent over the same period to Rs 77,896 crore. These two segments outpaced the overall NBFC book, which expanded 15.4 per cent to Rs 61.69 lakh crore. The figures indicate that gold-backed lending and financing of household appliances and gadgets accounted for a disproportionate share of incremental NBFC credit during the month.

Auditors and compliance officers may also need to assess whether internal controls have kept pace with portfolio growth, particularly around loan-to-value ratios in gold lending, where regulatory ceilings apply. The concentration of growth in two retail-facing segments also raises questions about credit underwriting standards and borrower indebtedness, themes that regulators have flagged in the past.
