November Seasonality And Nifty
Indian equity benchmarks have historically performed well in November, with Nifty 50 data from 2001 to 2025 showing an average gain of 2.5% for the month. The index closed higher in 15 of those 25 years, a 60% success rate. In the first three sessions of November 2026, the Nifty 50 has already risen over 2.7%. July ranks next with an average return of 2.2%, followed by April at 1.9% and September at 1.6%. February has been the weakest month, averaging a 0.7% decline, while January has averaged a 0.5% fall.
The trend has not been uniform. November produced double-digit gains in 2002, 2005 and 2020, but ended in losses in years including 2008, 2011, 2016 and 2021. This year, Diwali falls on 8 November, stretching festive activity across the month. SAMCO Securities expects this to support consumption sentiment, retail participation and market liquidity. Year-end portfolio rebalancing, institutional positioning and expectations of better earnings visibility may also aid a recovery as investors reassess valuations after the recent correction.
Why It Matters For Businesses
Seasonal strength affects listed companies, mutual funds and market-linked employee benefit plans, and it shapes how finance teams time fundraising, treasury deployment and hedging decisions. A rebound in equities can improve sentiment for initial public offerings and qualified institutional placements, while sustained weakness may delay capital-raising plans.
The backdrop remains difficult. Persistent foreign portfolio investor outflows, elevated crude oil prices, rupee depreciation and global uncertainty could cap any sustained recovery. SAMCO's Jahol Prajapati noted that while seasonal trends offer a historical basis for optimism, a durable recovery depends on improving earnings, stabilising global cues and renewed foreign investor participation.
